We are a family firm, comprised of two attorneys with over 40 years combined legal experience.  Both attorneys are Specialists in Family Law, certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.  Owing chiefly to the stringent requirements of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, less than one percent of Texas attorneys are currently certified as family law specialists.  A Family Law Specialist is required to demonstrate substantial experience and involvement in a wide variety of family matters before being entitled to sit for the six hour specialty examination. The requirements include having participated in a number of contested trials of cases in matters such as divorce, property division, child custody, child support, adoption, paternity or other matrimonial matters. And because of the nature of contested litigation, specialization prerequisites move beyond the requirement of a thorough knowledge of the substantive area of family law; it requires the attorney to also be thoroughly versed in the strategic and tactical use of procedural and evidentiary issues related the nature of active trial practice.

Family law often involves the very emotional and difficult breakup of a family unit and the division of marital property, debts and assets.  Family law requires patience and understanding, high ethical standards, and knowledge of the law pertaining to families and property.  Our attorneys have the experience and ability to negotiate these emotionally charged issues.  In addition to their legal training and experience, John and Karen are both mediators with extensive experience in negotiation. John Guerra has a Masters degree in Educational Psychology & Counseling and has been pursuing his doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy. Karen Guerra has a bachelor of business administration degree in Finance. 

While our attorneys will help clients achieve peaceable resolution of their family law disputes whenever possible, both attorneys are also very experienced trial attorneys, should litigation be necessary.  We use state of the art technology and a team approach that utilizes the talent of outside professionals as necessary, such as accountants, financial planners, appraisers, and mental health professionals.  We look forward to working with you.
